Episode 27
Once Upon a Time | LAYC27
The expression ‘Once Upon a Time’ may conjure up thoughts of a time when things were different, perhaps better, or at least simpler.
Generally, these are times fondly or romantically remembered but not always.
Once Upon a Time suggests a state of suspended history that we can look back on.
We know from stories of childhood bedtimes that there is always a hero or heroine who saves the day and rescues the defenseless. Ultimately and reassuringly, the good guys win. The witch melts, the dragon is slayed, and the kingdom celebrates once again.
But wait!
Why is the damsel always in distress?
Why is she always beautiful but helpless?
Why isn’t she riding in on a charging steed to save the day?
Why?
Because the stories are fictionalized versions of women’s potential, value and priorities.
REWRITE!
YOU are both the prisoner in the tower and the protagonist. You save the day, and you rescue you – yes, YOU!
You are your knight in shining armor.
You are the only one who can write the happy ending. You are the one who decides how you emerge from this year. It is your privilege and your responsibility to write a new script for the future – the next chapter of your life, a new role, your encore.
You may call it a pivot, reinvention, a new direction.
Whatever label you choose, what happens next is up to you.

Transcript
Welcome back my friends.
Isabel:Today is story time on our podcast.
Isabel:You know, story time, like when we were children and someone read
Isabel:us those fables and fairy tales of Princesses and good against
Isabel:evil and beautiful overcoming ugly.
Isabel:I don't know about you, but I had a pretty rich diet of Mother Goose nursery rhymes
Isabel:and Disney Princess stories, and movies...
Isabel:That set up in my impressionable young mind...
Isabel:My belief that light and beautiful and white was the ideal, that I
Isabel:should aim for and that anyone who was different, dark, misunderstood, or
Isabel:perhaps had some flaws or imperfections physically, must not be good...
Isabel:And therefore must be evil.
Isabel:Any wonder that we are confused as women growing up about what's important to be
Isabel:valued and to feel valued because the emphasis for us as children, was all on
Isabel:how we looked, and how demure and genteel we were, and if we had enough value
Isabel:to be rescued by the charming Prince.
Isabel:So to set up our conversation, I would like to take a moment and read
Isabel:to you an excerpt from my book, and then I'm going to come back, and
Isabel:let's talk a little bit about what that inspired in your thoughts...
Isabel:This is a reading from the book Who Am I Now?
Isabel:Feminine Wisdom, Unmasked and Uncensored.
Isabel:Read by the author, Isabel Banerjee.
Isabel:Once Upon a Time
Isabel:Once upon a time, there was a perfect woman.
Isabel:She had woke up every morning with a dewey, flawless complexion,
Isabel:perfectly arched brows, long luscious lashes, rosie, high cheekbones and
Isabel:lips that Angelina Jolie envied.
Isabel:She embodied all the best features of Disney's favorite Princesses and was
Isabel:forever free from cellulite, stretch marks, and underarm saggy wings.
Isabel:Her gorgeous locks fell effortlessly into style, and her
Isabel:roots never gave her a way...
Isabel:Hair grew only where it should be seen, and tweezers were redundant.
Isabel:Her smile was perfect and she never woke with morning breath.
Isabel:As you may have guessed, she did not fart, belch, sweat, or
Isabel:snort when she laughed hard.
Isabel:She never experienced root canals, dental implants, or bridges, and
Isabel:plaque could not attach to her pearly whites Her neck was smooth.
Isabel:Her decolletage felt like satin.
Isabel:Her breasts were perky and her ass was high and tight.
Isabel:When posed nude like a Grecian statue, not a single varicose vein scar age
Isabel:spot, or zit could be seen on her body.
Isabel:Her periods were perfectly minimal...
Isabel:Cramp and bloat free, and never interfered with vacations or date night.
Isabel:Each slender hand was soft and smooth and tipped with 10 perfectly manicured nails.
Isabel:Her feet were shapely and proportionate and exempt from bunions,
Isabel:calluses, and chipped toe polish.
Isabel:Any Prince would rather kiss those sweet toes, instead of trying the slipper on.
Isabel:She told the truth about her weight, even though it was always exactly perfect.
Isabel:And of course, no one would believe her real age, so she
Isabel:didn't need to discuss that.
Isabel:Our perfect woman was always even tempered and kind her good nature allowed
Isabel:her to listen to political rants...
Isabel:and endless Facebook Sales pitches with Mona Lisa composure.
Isabel:Her BFFs were forever on Facebook...
Isabel:She learned that she liked people much better...
Isabel:When they were liking her.
Isabel:She never judged anyone on their narcissistic video broadcasts
Isabel:for moving cars, or criticized their choice of camera, angle,
Isabel:or background sounds, and light.
Isabel:Her own social media was always perfect, relevant, and fascinating...
Isabel:Exempt from ego and insecurity, she could declare:
Isabel:Mirror, mirror, on the wall...
Isabel:My selfies are the best of all...
Isabel:Her license plate was IDEAL ME...
Isabel:and she always got the parking spot closest to the entrance.
Isabel:She never forgot her shopping bags, and took precisely the right number
Isabel:of bags into the store each time.
Isabel:Her coupons were sorted by date...
Isabel:and then alphabetically.
Isabel:Of course, she was an impeccable chef, and all her meals were Instagram worthy.
Isabel:She didn't eat the food, she just commemorated it on social media...
Isabel:It helped her to maintain that perfect figure.
Isabel:Leftover wine was stored at the perfect temperature...
Isabel:Ladies...
Isabel:We know there's no such thing as leftover wine!
Isabel:Her home's sparkled, and the dust bunnies had been trained to line up...
Isabel:and march right out the front door!
Isabel:Her toilets were always clean.
Isabel:Her closets and drawers were all Con-Married, and her shoes were arranged
Isabel:by designer, on remote controlled towers.
Isabel:Our fair maiden of the story was, as you may have anticipated...
Isabel:A sex kitten, a Tigris, and a skilled lover.
Isabel:She knew what she wanted, and was not afraid to ask for it.
Isabel:She was always ready...
Isabel:Her legs were smooth, and her Brazilian was fresh.
Isabel:Her lingerie was seductive, and expensive...
Isabel:She astutely invested in rechargeable batteries.
Isabel:She always enjoyed multiple orgasms.
Isabel:She just wouldn't settle for less.
Isabel:And now I'm guessing that you're calling bullshit...
Isabel:That woman can not exist.
Isabel:But she does, in the subconscious of our collective minds.
Isabel:The leading lady of this fable embodies just some of the criticism, unrealistic
Isabel:expectations and judgments, that we as women have embraced, projected, and
Isabel:struggled with throughout our lives.
Isabel:As ridiculous as this fairy tale seems, it's only part of the
Isabel:story that we tell ourselves.
Isabel:We hold ourselves up to impossibly perfect standards.
Isabel:That were set by others.
Isabel:I think it's time we talk about how some of these ideals were
Isabel:embedded into our subconscious.
Isabel:Think back to your childhood exposure to books and film...
Isabel:The female protagonists were damsels in distress...
Isabel:In need of rescue by a gallant Knight...
Isabel:porcelain skin beauties, whose life purpose was to attract the mate...
Isabel:Who would save her Father's kingdom...
Isabel:and naive females who battled the consequences of wicked Stepmothers
Isabel:or Grandmother eating wolves.
Isabel:To make it into the story...
Isabel:They had to be pretty, vulnerable, and able to communicate with wild creatures.
Isabel:To survive, they had to seduce, sacrifice, and stay attractive.
Isabel:I don't remember many examples of strong, confident female role models...
Isabel:That were encouraged to be intelligent, independent thinkers while also
Isabel:being loving and trustworthy.
Isabel:Brene Brown said, It's time to be a lot more empathetic with ourselves.
Isabel:Let us be kind, and remind ourselves that from early childhood, we were
Isabel:fed a diet of perfect Princesses.
Isabel:Only the pretty ones were good, light, and sparkly.
Isabel:The evil Queens were always frightening...
Isabel:Ugly...
Isabel:Dark...
Isabel:Only the perfect pretty size zero one's...
Isabel:Got the happy ending.
Isabel:It's time...
Isabel:To re-examine the plot and change some paradigms.
Isabel:We can write our own story and definition of perfection.
Isabel:And..
Isabel:We can all live happily ever after...
Isabel:With our perfectly im-perfect bodies, attitudes, selfies, and housekeeping!
Isabel:Let's start a conversation by answering this question:
Isabel:Mirror, Mirror on the wall...
Isabel:Who is our harshest critic of them all?
Isabel:Signed,
Isabel:Fairy Godmother,
Isabel:Isabel
Isabel:Well, welcome back everyone!
Isabel:I hope you enjoyed story time...
Isabel:and that I brought a smile to your face, as you started to recognize
Isabel:the fallacy of some of our beliefs...
Isabel:How they may have been anchored in the modeling that we received as children...
Isabel:about what constitutes beauty...
Isabel:And value in an individual.
Isabel:As I record this episode, the movie Cruella with Emma Stone, is
Isabel:breaking records at the box office.
Isabel:Once again...
Isabel:It's a story of how people judge us by our physical appearance...
Isabel:Based on standards and perceptions and prejudices...
Isabel:Biases that have been established long ago.
Isabel:Really...
Isabel:When are we as women going to get it?
Isabel:No one else should have the right to define us...
Isabel:It's up to Us...
Isabel:Take back the Pen...
Isabel:and Write the Script...
Isabel:For the Future...
Isabel:You desire.
Isabel:That will showcase YOU in all of your beauty, and your talent, and your ability.
Isabel:No one else should write our story.
Isabel:No one else should decide for us.
Isabel:What is beautiful?
Isabel:What is valuable...
Isabel:Or what our legacy will be.
Isabel:When I started to write the book, Who Am I Now?
Isabel:I struggled to define myself...
Isabel:and finally I did come up with a process.
Isabel:In terms of being an author of my future...
Isabel:I realized that first, I needed to write the prologue of the story.
Isabel:And I created a tool I call my personal currency evaluation.
Isabel:What it does...
Isabel:Is help me capture and update, and review regularly...
Isabel:All of the lifetime value that I have.
Isabel:My strengths...
Isabel:My skills...
Isabel:The experience of my life...
Isabel:That no one else has.
Isabel:My accumulated, tacit knowledge...
Isabel:The resources that I have.
Isabel:I created a simple model that I'd like to share with you.
Isabel:You can get a copy at www.MyEncore.Me...
Isabel:And I hope that will help you, to start writing your next story.
Isabel:I'll put the link in the show notes.
Isabel:Let's close the storybook for today...
Isabel:But I invite you to stick around because I'm going to share a very fascinating
Isabel:story about the woman, the life and the movement that she created...
Isabel:I have the extreme honor of being able to interview Jen Harper...
Isabel:Who was recently named by Chatelaine Magazine as a woman of the year.
Isabel:If you don't know who Jen Harper is...
Isabel:Go check out Cheekbone Beauty, and get a little bit of her story, but I'm going
Isabel:to share a lot more in our conversation.
Isabel:Jenn is a role model...
Isabel:She's a champion for beauty, diversity, and women's rights.
Isabel:And I couldn't think of anybody better to define what Lift As
Isabel:You Climb means for all of us!
Isabel:Don't miss that episode!...
